## Words, purpose, then one complete reading

## Read the connection, not just the unfamiliar word

Imagine a note with three headings: what was found, what the team hopes to achieve, and what is proposed. Those headings do different work. The finding tells you the starting point. The goal explains the intended destination. A proposed action describes part of the plan for working toward it.

For example, 'make room' is an action phrase. On its own it leaves the purpose unstated. 'Make room for the tooth named in the explanation' connects that phrase to a goal. The complete example in this guide shows how a reader can follow that connection without deciding treatment.


## Start with the part you want to understand

Use Words and views when a term or a drawing is unclear. Use Goals and roles when several actions or clinicians appear in one explanation. Use Complete example to see all the pieces connected in a fully written fictional note and a filled reading.
