# Read the words and the view together

Unerupted\-tooth explanation guide

Lesson 1 • Words and views

Begin with the tooth and finding named by the clinician. A model can make a description easier to follow only when its viewpoint and information source are clear.

The examples and models are fictional teaching material.

## What the two terms contribute

Eruption means a tooth coming through the gums. Unerupted describes one that has not emerged. Impacted describes a tooth whose emergence is obstructed or off course; it may be partly visible. The clinician establishes which description applies. A visible gap alone does not establish impaction.

## The same teaching model, two information layers

### Visible information and a supplied finding

Two original fictional models. The second adds information stated in a note; it is not a deeper view obtained from the first.

#### A. The visible row only

Front view of part of a fictional upper row

- Solid shapes: visible crown symbols.
- Dark line: the drawn gum boundary.
- Short underline: an unfilled position; its cause is not supplied by this view.

#### B. The note adds a finding

Same orientation, with supplied information represented

- Shaded region: the gum\-covered area in this schematic.
- Dashed shape: the upper left canine named as still covered in the fictional note.
- The symbol records the statement. Its depth and exact anatomy are not shown.

Upper row, facing the fictional person. Their left is on your right. Simple symbols are not anatomy, an X\-ray or a basis for matching your own teeth.

The first panel gives the reader only an ordinary view of a fictional row. Its unfilled position is visible. The second panel adds a symbol because a fictional clinician has supplied an additional finding. The added symbol represents that statement; it was not discovered by looking at the first panel.

Notice the orientation before comparing the panels. You are facing the fictional person, so their left is on your right. The model shows only a short part of the upper row. Its simple crown outlines do not show roots, depth, distances or the rest of the mouth. An actual clinical image would contain different information and require professional interpretation.

## A supplied sentence has a subject and a finding

This way of reading preserves who supplied the finding. If a diagram and the written explanation seem inconsistent, the useful next step is clarification from the clinician who made the assessment. The family is not being asked to interpret an image or reconcile clinical findings independently.

**Filled reading of the fictional statement: 'The upper left canine is still covered.'**

| Part of the statement | What this reading keeps |
| --- | --- |
| The upper left canine | This is the tooth named by the fictional clinician. The model marks that supplied subject; it is not a tooth\-identification exercise. |
| Is still covered | This is the stated finding in the example. It adds information beyond the unfilled position in the visible row. |
| What the sentence does not supply | It gives no personal explanation for a reader's own gap, no complete plan and no predicted result. Those cannot be filled in from this picture. |

## Carry the supplied finding into the next part

After identifying what the statement actually says, look for the purpose attached to it. 'Still covered' describes the example's starting point. It does not, by itself, say what the team proposes. The next lesson separates the proposed goal, action words and responsibilities so those parts stay connected.
